Carryout Position Job Description
King’s Famous Barbecue Location: 2910 S Crater Rd, Petersburg, VA 23805
Job Type: Part-time / Full-time (Flexible hours, including evenings and weekends)
Reports to: Operations Manager or General Manager
King’s Famous Barbecue is an iconic, family-owned Petersburg institution established in 1946, renowned for its authentic pit-smoked Virginia-style barbecue (pork, beef, and chicken), signature sauce, homemade sides like potato cakes and hush puppies, and classic Southern comfort food. After a temporary closure, the restaurant is preparing to reopen in 2026 with the same dedication to quality, tradition, and community. The Carryout (To-Go / Takeout) Team Member plays a key role in providing fast, friendly service to customers picking up their favorite BBQ meals, ensuring every order is accurate, hot, and packaged with care.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet customers warmly over the phone and in-person, answering questions about the menu, specials, and our famous barbecue sauce
- Accurately take carryout orders (phone, walk-in, or online when available), including custom requests for BBQ, plates, party packs, sides, and desserts
- Process payments efficiently using cash, credit/debit cards, and any digital options
- Prepare and package orders promptly — boxing meals, adding utensils, napkins, sauce packets, and ensuring everything is secure and appealing for travel
- Verify orders for accuracy before handing them to customers to prevent mistakes
- Maintain a clean, organized carryout/counter area, including wiping surfaces, restocking bags/boxes, and keeping the pickup zone tidy
- Assist with light front-of-house tasks during slower periods, such as helping restock sides or supporting the dining room team
- Handle customer concerns professionally, with a positive attitude, and escalate issues to management when needed
- Perform opening/closing duties for the carryout station, including setup, cash handling, and end-of-shift reconciliation
Requirements & Qualifications
- No formal education required — high school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous customer service, restaurant, or retail experience is a plus (especially in takeout, drive-thru, or fast-paced environments), but we provide thorough training!
- Friendly, outgoing personality with excellent communication skills — you’ll interact with loyal locals and visitors who love our history and food
- Ability to work in a fast-paced setting during peak times (lunch, dinner rushes, and weekends)
- Strong attention to detail to ensure every order is correct and beautifully packaged
- Comfortable standing for extended periods and lifting moderate weights (BBQ trays, bags, etc.)
- Reliable, punctual, and team-oriented — we’re a small, family-run operation where everyone pitches in
- Basic math skills for handling cash and change
