King’s Barbecue was established on December 20, 1946 by brothers John W. King and Clinton King. Located in the historic city of Petersburg, we are one of the oldest family-owned BBQ restaurants in the state of Virginia. Our mission has always been to provide simple, home cooked, quality food everyday in a family-friendly atmosphere. We use the freshest meats that are slow-cooked over oak wood, make homemade items from scratch, and continue to use our family’s perfected sauce recipe to create our unique brand of BBQ. Now in our third generation of ownership, we hope that you will be able to “make our family tradition…your family tradition.”
Keeping a barbecue tradition means keeping the quality of our meats up to our standards. We invest in the best cuts of meats and local ingredients that are bought from name brand companies to ensure the highest in quality, consistency, and flavor. This way we can ensure great food day-in and day-out to our customers.
Fresh whole pork shoulders from Smithfield, VA is the key ingredient to our famous barbecue. We slow cook them at a low temperature for over 12 hours using oak wood to provide the smoke profile. Then they are moved to our open pit where our meat cutters will take the freshly cooked pork and chop your BBQ to order. (Minced and Sliced are the proper Virginia terms)
Virginia isn't known for it's BBQ beef, but for many years King's has been serving up its own version that could rival with the Texas brisket. We use Top Butt Sirloin that is slow cooked over oak coals. Unlike brisket (which can only only be served well done because of it's toughness), our beef can be served in any temperature ours customers like from Rare to Well done.
We use fresh chickens that are marinated with our original BBQ sauce and slowly smoked in our pit. We also serve fresh and juicy buttermilk fried chicken that is prepared and cooked to order. And even fresh fried chicken livers which are a southern delicacy.
There is only ONE bottle of sauce on the table at our restaurant and that is our original King’s Famous Barbecue sauce! It is the key ingredient to our style of barbecue. This recipe, which origins go back almost 100 years ago, was perfected by John King in the 1940’s and passed down his family for three generations. It’s a tangy tomato, vinegar, & mustard base sauce and it’s what puts the “Famous” in “King’s Famous Barbecue”. The prime example of authentic Virginia BBQ sauce.
